In a major shift, New York City Transit President Andy Byford’s Fast Forward plan aims to make every subway station accessible by 2034. With congestion pricing and other revenue sources secured in this year’s state budget, the agency should have the means to deliver. What can New York learn from its peers that are delivering for riders with disabilities?
Join TransitCenter & NYC Transit as we host senior accessibility officials from Chicago CTA and Boston MBTA, two agencies forging ahead on subway station accessibility and elevator reliability.

Is public transportation a right? Should it be? For those reliant on public transit, the answer is invariably “yes” to both. For those who lack other means of mobility, transit is a lifeline. It offers access to many of the entitlements we take as essential: food, employment, and democratic public life itself.
Rights in Transit offers a direct challenge to contemporary scholarship on transportation equity. Rather than focusing on civil rights alone, Rights in Transit argues for engaging the more radical notion of the right to the city.
